One of the best features about having Google Home-enabled smart speakers throughout your house is multi-room audio. The ability to play the same audio throughout your house in a synchronized fashion really adds an extra element of luxury to your home. I’ve implemented multi-room audio in my own home using mix of Google-enabled audio devices. These include Chromecast Audio dongles, Google Home Mini speakers, Insignia Voice Alarm Clocks, and one Lenovo Smart Display. In our home, we can play music throughout the entirety of our home, all at once. This has been a nice addition to get-togethers that we’ve hosted. It’s also an effective way to spread the Christmas spirit via music throughout the house during the holidays.
The setup is fairly simple within the Google Home app. Under the Account settings on the bottom left corner of the app – navigate to the “Set up or add” menu option, and select
“Create speaker group” from there.
You can create as many different speaker groups as you’d like. I set up a group for the entire house, and one for the downstairs speakers only. You can cast audio to your speaker groups the same way you would cast to an individual speaker.
The Google Assistant will be able to understand commands involving these speaker groups as well. For example, you will now be able to ask the assistant to “Play Christmas Music from Spotify on Downstairs Audio” to play the same selection of music to all of the speakers within the speaker group labelled Downstairs Audio.
This is possibly my favorite feature that comes along with owning multiple Google Assistant-enabled speakers. If you use this already, and have been able to find even more situations to take advantage of this feature, please reach out to me and let me know!
